Can't Find iPhone or iPad

Updated May 6, 2026 6 min read

Simple Transfer sends files across your local network so they never leave your home. That privacy-first design is a real benefit, but it means the iPhone and computer must be allowed to see each other on the same network.

Almost every connection problem traces back to one of: guest WiFi, router isolation, VPN, firewall or antivirus, missing Local Network permission, a locked phone, or the iPhone and computer being on different network segments.

Try these first

Connect the iPhone and computer to the same home WiFi network.
Open Simple Transfer on the iPhone and keep the device unlocked.
Allow Local Network access for Simple Transfer on the iPhone.
Turn off VPN, firewall, or strict security software temporarily.
Avoid guest WiFi for setup.
Restart router, iPhone, and computer if discovery still fails.
If WiFi is blocked, use USB.
1

Start with the network

Confirm both devices are on the same router and same network name.
Avoid guest networks. Most block devices from seeing each other.
On corporate, school, hotel, or public WiFi, expect device isolation. USB is the right move there.
If your router has client/AP/privacy isolation enabled, turn it off for your home network.
If the computer is on Ethernet and the iPhone on WiFi, make sure both go through the same home router.
Restart the router if it has been unstable lately.
2

Check the iPhone or iPad

Open Simple Transfer and keep it in the foreground during setup.
Allow Local Network access if iOS asks (Settings → Simple Transfer → Local Network).
Disable VPN for the test.
Restart the iPhone if Local Network permission was recently changed.
3

Check the computer

Windows: set the network profile to Private for trusted home WiFi.
Windows: allow Simple Transfer Desktop through Windows Firewall.
Mac: turn off VPN, firewall rules, or network filtering tools while testing.
Pause antivirus, proxy, or strict security software during the test.
Restart the Desktop app after changing firewall or network settings.

Still not connecting?

If you have worked through everything above and the iPhone still does not appear, switch to USB transfer. USB avoids almost every network-level discovery problem.

If both methods fail, tap Settings › Help › Report a Bug in the Simple Transfer app. The bug report automatically attaches your device details, which helps narrow down the problem faster than typing them manually.
